Designing a Coffee Label People Actually Read

KIN coffee bag and takeaway cup among roasted beans

Speciality coffee bags tend to carry a great deal of information and communicate very little of it. For KIN we started with the question customers ask most often, which is simply: what will this taste like?

One order, every bag

Origin, process, roast date and tasting notes always sit in the same place and the same order. After two or three bags customers stop reading the layout and start reading the coffee.

Two distances

The wordmark is built to be read from the pavement, wide and open. The label is built to be read in the hand, set small and tight. The two never compete because they never try to do the same job.

Leaving room

Every label has a blank field for the roasters to write on by hand. It is the most used part of the system, and the one customers mention first.
